Supplements For New Found Results

By Gabriel Wilson, Ph.D., CSCS

The most basic concept for weight loss is balancing caloric intake with caloric expenditure. If you consume less than you burn, you will lose weight; and if you eat more than you burn, you’ll pack the pounds on fast. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. The harder you diet and exercise, the more your body resists you. Soon the same diet that initially promoted fat burning and weight loss can result in weight maintenance or even weight gain…This is a consequence of a slowed metabolism, and there is nothing more frustrating to an individual dieting than this. If you are one of those stuck in a rut, even with consistent diet and exercise, then you’ll be happy to learn that there are indeed ways to smash through your plateaus! Today I’d like to discuss with you some new and exciting scientific breakthroughs in supplementation research that could take your program to the next level.

Turn Down the Heat, To Stoke the Metabolism?

Most think that turning up the heat is important for maintaining a high metabolism, but it may be just the opposite…You see, research shows that metabolism is dramatically higher during the winter months and in response to cold exposure 1. In fact, people who simply sleep in slightly colder environments can significantly boost their metabolic rates 2. The reason why is that your body has to work harder to maintain its core temperature, thus burning more calories. Shivering is your body’s most basic way of maintaining heat during cold exposure, but a second process called non-shivering thermogenesis through brown adipose activation is particularly interesting. To elaborate, when your body starts to get cold your brain senses this and releases signals that communicate and activate your brown fat, which acts as a “furnace” in the body to burn excess calories off as heat, resulting in an increase in metabolism, thereby warming your body. Interestingly, research shows that brown adipose activity declines as we age, and also decreases with prolonged dieting, possibly contributing to the dreaded plateau 3.

So is the solution to sit in a cold room all day? Well, thankfully there are a couple of viable alternatives! Possibly the best researched ingredient for brown adipose activation is a West African plant extract called Grains of Paradise (aframomum melegueta seed extract), rich in the bioactive compound 6-paradol. In two clinical trials, humans supplementing with this plant extract experienced significant improvements in metabolic rate and fat loss, and these results were shown to be dependent on activation of brown adipose tissue 4,5.

Physical activity, and particularly high intensity exercise may support brown adipose, possibly through increasing of a unique muscle protein called irisin. Discovered just recently in 2012, this muscle hormone seems to be increased by exercise and travels in the body to adipose tissue where it helps activate brown adipose 6. Through brown adipose activation, irisin is thought to support insulin and glucose metabolism, and fat loss. Physical activity also promotes a protein in muscle called AMPK, which also enhances fat burning, and boosts energy.

New MHP Fat Burner Breaks Plateaus

A new weight loss innovation that just hit the market is Ultrisine HardcoreTM, developed by the sports supplement company MHP (Maximum Human Performance). Ultrisine Hardcore is backed by two human clinical trials and a U.S. provisional patent. This supplement appears to work by stimulating metabolic rate and brown adipose tissue. In addition, an in vitro muscle cell culture study demonstrated that its key ingredients doubled irisin production in muscle and also powerfully increased AMPK activation.

The first human clinical demonstrated that after a single serving, Ultrisine Hardcore increased calorie burning by over 230 calories more than the placebo control group in just 90 minutes. To put this in perspective, to burn this many calories the average 150 lb person would have to run over 2 miles, or walk over 5,500 steps! In a second 8-week clinical study, men and women on a controlled diet and exercise program lost over 10 lbs by taking only a single serving (two capsules) of Ultrisine Hardcore Daily – this was over 40% more weight loss than the placebo group. However, even more fascinating is that ~87% of weight loss in the placebo group occurred during the first month of diet and exercise; after which they hit a dramatic plateau. On the contrary, Ultrisine Hardcore lost weight every single week during the study. This resulted in 4X greater weight loss than the placebo group during the final 4-weeks of the study (weeks 5 through 8). Talk about busting through a plateau 7!

This formula features gynostemma pentyphyllum leaf extract and trans resveratrol, purported to increase AMPK activation, as well as grains of paradise, the brown adipose activating plant extract, standardized for 6-paradol. In addition, Ultrisine Hardcore contains 300mg of caffeine, green tea extract, citrus aurantium unripe fruit extract, yohimbe and multiple other ingredients, plus potent doses of chromium and vitamin B6. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this formula, is that all the research is based on a once daily serving recommendation.

The next time you are stuck in a dieting plateau, consider giving Ultrisine Hardcore a shot.
